Ada sat, feeling very sad in the hut where she and her husband, Ikechukwu, lived. Both were orphans who had lived in Orisunmi for nine years. Ikechukwu, a hunter, took up his father's work even before he died. They were neither rich nor poor. Although he had been successful in hunting various animals, including buffaloes, things had changed recently. These days, he often set out hunting in the morning but returned home late with nothing. This situation left the couple feeling disheartened.

One day, after returning from yet another fruitless hunt, Ikechukwu was feeling down when he encountered an old, rugged woman carrying a heavy load. Despite her insistence that she needed no help, Ikechukwu persisted in assisting her. After some back and forth, she agreed to let him carry her load.

They walked silently along a narrow road for about thirty minutes, with Ikechukwu growing increasingly tired and wondering where the woman lived. Finally, they arrived at her hut. After Ikechukwu set down her load and turned to leave, the woman called him back and handed him a white chicken. Puzzled, Ikechukwu accepted the chicken. The old woman said, "My son, don't be afraid; take good care of this chicken, and you will never be poor." Reluctantly, he took the chicken and made his way home, where he recounted the entire event to Ada. They both agreed to take good care of the chicken.

A few days later, Ikechukwu discovered that the chicken had laid three golden eggs. Astonished, he hurried to show Ada, and they began to consider selling the eggs for a substantial profit. They eventually decided to sell the eggs, which the chicken continued to lay every three days.

One day, Ada suggested to Ikechukwu that if they killed the chicken, they could obtain all the eggs inside and become exceedingly rich. Ignoring the old woman's warning, Ikechukwu foolishly accepted the idea. They killed the chicken, but to their dismay, found nothing inside. This unfortunate choice left them both sad and as poor as church mice.

Since then, Ada's sadness had lingered.

This story carries a timeless lesson, like the typical grandmother's fables told under the moonlight.

"The Price of Greed" is a compelling exploration of human behavior and the consequences of short-sighted desires. It reveals how greed creeps in, disguised as ambition. After all, prosperity in itself is not as important as the patience required to sustain it.
