Bayo retreated to the street, finding a means of survival and livelihood. He ran after buses at the park to sell his bread and earn an income.

Two years ago, Bayo lived with his parents in the village, where he followed his father to the farm and helped his mother carry firewood for cooking.

Every night, he sat outside to think while other children listened to stories with Iya Agba under the iroko tree. His parents pondered over their son's actions and called him the following morning.

“Why are you sad, my son?” his father asked.

“I'm unhappy because I'm not in school,” Bayo replied.

“While other children live happily and discuss their interesting moments in school, I'm left out.”

“Hmm… what are we going to do?” his mother intervened.

“I have a brother who lives in Lagos, and I'll discuss this with him. He should be ready to help with Bayo's accommodation. He's a good man.”

Bayo's father called his brother, who agreed to accommodate Bayo and provide him with necessities for his education.

One year later, Bayo was already in Lagos, excelling in his class and earning admiration from his peers.

However, Bayo's uncle's wife was dissatisfied with his success.

“Here are your uncle's clothes; wash them, clean the toilet, and wash the dishes... you village boy,” she'd say, giving him a load of work to keep him busy from reading.

Bayo's uncle was unaware of his wife's behavior. Whenever he was around, they lived happily like lovebirds. Bayo never disobeyed his uncle's wife, hoping for a better future.

Sometimes, she refused to give him the money his uncle provided for books and food. Bayo used his personal savings to buy bread, selling it at the park to earn money for books.

After a long day, Bayo stayed awake at night to read, determined to succeed. His hard work paid off when he came out on top in his class, earning numerous awards and a scholarship from the government to sponsor his tertiary education.

Being emotional, tears rolled down his eyes as Bayo hugged his parents tightly and bid his uncle goodbye as he left to further his education.
